Came to Iowa in 1883
MRS W.H.DAY, PIONEER, DEADHad Lived in Hardin County since 1883(The Eldora Herald Ledger, Thurs. Aug.3, 1933)Mrs. William H. Day, a pioneer Hardin County resident, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Besse Reece, at New Providence Iowa, after an illness of about four months.Mr. & Mrs. Day came to Iowa in 1883, living on a farm near Whitten until 1903 when they moved to Whitten and took over the management of the Hotel there, where for fourteen years she was known to the public as "Mother Day".She was born Sarah M. Raine in New Diggings, Wisconsin on July 27 1848 and was 85 years old at the time of her death. She was married to William H. Day at Hazel Green Wisconsin on Novemeber 25, 1865 and to this union were born 12 children. She was preceded in death by her husband, four sons and one daughter, and is survived by one son Marvin E. Day of Whitten and six daughters: Mrs. Charles Cowell of Gifford, Mrs. Margaret Nelson of Eldora, Mrs. Annie Weaver and Mrs. Edna Hauser both of Whitten, Mrs. Hilda Roll of St. Ansgar, and Mrs. Bessie Reece of New Providence. Also thirty grandchildren and forty two great grandchildren.Mrs. Day was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, her father and mother being in the ministry, and also five Uncles, one of who was a Bishop in the Church of England. Short funeral services were to be held this afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Reece at New Providence at 1 p.m. Followed by services at the Methodist Church in Whitten at 2 p.m. with burial in the Benson Cemetary near Whitten.
