    • History of the Lockard Family
      By Ethel Lockard Carson
      September 1982

I am the last descendant of the Ira Sanford Lockard family. I am 97, pretty good, work in the yard and do sewing for other people. Keep busy all the time. Will be 98, November 2, 1982. I was born at Union, Hardin County, Iowa on November 2, 1884. I have a picture of the Old Log house. My Grandfater (William Lockard, 1814 to 1895) hewed the big logs with a broad ax to make them square and builded a log cabin to live in. Later after my father was born in that log cabin, after he was married, they built an addition and resided in all of it. My father (Ira Sanford Lockard, 1856-1940) was born in the log cabin March 13, 1856. I was born in the same house. My husband Clair (Clair E. Carson who died 26 June 1930) was working for my father and the old house was fixed up real nice inside and our second son Harry Clarence Carson was also born in the same house. Three generations and it still remained until a farmer bought the farm and they tore it down. So much for that.

In 1893 my father builded a big house of 13 rooms which is standing and kept up in good shape by the man that bought the farm.

My Grandfather, William Lockard, don't know his middle name, was born March 24, 1814 in Williamport, W.V. and married Elizabeth Ann Steinbarger, December 22, 1833. He died January 16, 1895 at his son Ira Sanford Lockard and is buried at Hauser Cemetery, Whitten, Hardin County. Eliabeth Ann Steinbarger, wife of William Lockard was born February 22, 1817 in Champaign County, Ohio and died November 19, 18890 in Union, Hardin County, at home and is buried in Hauser Cemetery, Whitten, Hardin, Iowa. They were the parents of seven sons and one daughter, Mary, who died young. Two sons, John and Philander, ages 20 and 22, enlisted in the Civil War. Both were wounded. John was sent home by way of Waterloo, and my Grandfather William Lockard took a team and wagon to Waterloo to bring him home, and he died on the way May 22, 1862. He is buried in Hauser Cemetery, Whitten, Hardin County, Iowa. Philander died of typhoid fever in St. Louis, Missouri and is buried there. Philip died in infancy. George W. Lockard and Thomas Jefferson Lockard both came to Union, Hardin County, Iowa.

George W. Lockard, born July 25, 1844 in Champaign, Ohio married Sarah Jane Hauser on July 4, 1867. She was the daughter of Thomas and Nancy Hauser. They were the parents of Theodor Eddwin Lockard and raised one son, Eddwin Lockard (b. 1870) and one daughter Nellie (b. 1868). Nellie married Lou Tucker, they lived on a farm, later moved to Des Moines. They had one son, Leo Lockard, and one daughter Loca. Both died and buried in Des Moines.

Thomas Jefferson Lockard was born in 1847 or 1848 in Ohio. He married Jeannetta Taylor. They had three daughters; Grace, Byrd, and Gertrude, birth dates unkown, born at Union, Hardin County, Iowa. All deceased time unkown. Grace married Jake Roemer and had two daughters Jannet Byrdnette and one son, J. Roemer. Grace and Jack both deceased and are buried in Elwood Cemetery, Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa. Children unknown. Byrd married Will Myers of Liscomb, Hardin County, Iowa. They were parents of two daughters, Maxine and Margueritte. Maxine married Harold Gallaway, date unkown, one daughter Mary Lou married Keith Biersborn, undertaker with his father Eddwin Biersborn. Maxine deceased, buried at Liscomb Cemetery, Hardin, IA. Margueritte married William Boyd now deceased and buried in Liscomb Cemetery, Hardin County, Iowa. No family.

Issac Lockard infant deat date unknown.
Ira Sanford Lockard was born March 13, 1855 and died January 20, 1940. He married Rosina Carmella Jester on November 5, 1876 at Union, Hardin County, Iowa, daughter of James and Mary Jester. All deceased and buried in Union Cemetery, Hardin County, Iowa. They were the parents of seven daughters and one son.

My sister, Lillian Lockard, daughter (oldest) of Ira Sanford Lockard and Rosina Carmella Jester Lockard was born on June 29, 1878. She married Clavin Newby, date unkown. They had one daughter, Winifred who married Everett Leech in Des Moines. They were parents of one daughter Patricia and a son William (Billy). Patricia married a Stedman and had five daughters and a son all living in Houston, Texas. My mother and father got a 1911 History Book (Past and Present of Hardin COunty, Iowa by William J. Moir) and after their death my oldest sister Lillian fell after to that, she made her home with a daughter, Winifred Lockard Leech and Everett Leech, her husband, she (Winifred) died in February I think. Lillian is buried in Hauser Cemetery in Whitten, Iowa.
